What’s Happening?

AstroSat, India’s first astronomy observatory, has turned 10 years old! Launched in 2015, it watches the universe in three ways at once, X-ray, ultraviolet (UV), and optical light from its orbit above Earth.

India’s ISRO runs it, and the data comes down to Bengaluru and Bylalu, where scientists process it. Even though it was originally planned to run for five years, AstroSat is still going strong, twice its expected lifespan!

Over the past decade, AstroSat has helped solve mysteries: observing ultraviolet light from objects about 9 billion light-years away and even helping 132 Indian universities use its discoveries.

Why is it Important?

This is more than just a scientific instrument, it’s like a time-machine in space that lets us see how the universe works.

AstroSat’s success shows what you can do when curiosity, engineering, and teamwork come together: it breaks predictions, explores the unknown, and shares its findings far and wide. For India and the world, it’s proof that great things happen when we reach for the stars… literally.
